Julius Caesar

Santa Fe Summer Shakespeare • International Shakespeare Center Santa Fe

Directed by Ariana Karp of the ISC.

Set in Rome in 44 BCE, the Roman nobleman and Senator Brutus faces a moral dilemma regarding the aspirations of Julius Caesar; Brutus joins a conspiracy to murder Caesar to prevent him from possibly becoming a dictator of Rome, and continues to make bad decisions from there. Mark Antony riles up Rome into a civil war. Ironically for the conspirators, their action to prevent an emperor is just what destroyed the Republic and led to the Roman Empire.

The play focuses on psychological struggles and powers, as well as conflicting demands of patriotism, perceived future outcomes, and friendship.
