Shakespeare’s Meter! Why it’s brilliant, fun, and important

Think you appreciate Shakespeare’s brilliance? Take a closer look at the specific metrical form (iambic pentameter) that Shakespeare uses and your amazement will grow. We’ll learn how Shakespeare uses meter to tell a Reader about emotion, what’s important, pronunciation, as an aid in memorization, and we’ll learn to appreciate the music of the sound. Taught by iRead Shakespeare Founder Dr. Robin Williams.

The workshop also showcases Shakespeare’s use of other forms of meter for specific purposes, plus we’ll look at the use and importance of rhyme, prose, and the sonnet form. Participants will regularly break into small groups (Zoom rooms) to scan and discuss passages and to collaboratively write some metered verse. Handouts and worksheets will emailed to participants before the sessions.
